Thiba Palace In Ratnagiri

This palace was used for keeping the King Thibaw, last king of Burma (now Myanmar) under house arrest. Thibaw ruled the Burma for 6 years. This 97 year old palace is linked with the history of Burma.

The Thiba Palace was built in 1910-11 for the 1911-16 stay there in exile of the king and the queen of Burma (Myanmar). The place has tombs of the royal couple.

Burma was partitioned from India in 1935. British took over the Burma kingdom and arrested king Thibaw.
To keep him far away from his kingdom i.e. Burma he was kept under house arrest at Ratnagiri. Though the king was under British rule, he was given legal rights and was treated with the state honors. King and Queen lived in this palace from 1911 till their death in 1916.

King died at the age of 58 in Ratnagiri.

The palace is a beautifully constructed three  storied structure with sloping Mangalorian roofs. it’s beautifully made with famous purple coloured Jambha rock. Semi-circular wooden windows with beautiful curving are the main attraction of this structure. On the first floor one dancing hall with a fully marble tiles floor. The back side of the palace has been converted in to archaeological  museum. Presently the palace is maintained by archaeological department of India. The plans are to convert the palace in to museum and providing tourist accommodation there.
