Karla Caves/ Buddhist Caves(Unexpectedly Nice Place) In Lonavala

The Karla Caves  are a complex of ancient Indian Buddhist rock-cut cave shrines located in Karli near Lonavala.

Karla is one of the most famous centres of early rock-cut architecture. The group at Karla consists of 16 rock cut excavations.

The shrines were developed over two periods – from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, and from the 5th century AD to the 10th century. The oldest of the cave

shrines is believed to date back to 160 BC.Today, the cave complex is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

These are basically Buddhist caves with fine Sculpture. These caves are about 2000 years old and carved into the mountain with a chisel and a hammer. There is a Ekveera Devi temple on the hill. Ideal picnic spot for a one day return trip.

The caves house a Buddhist monastery dating back to the 2nd century BC. The monastery was once home to two 15-meter grand pillars. Now only one of these remains, and the remaining space is occupied by a temple dedicated to the goddess Ekveera.

The hall measures 37.87 m deep from door to back; 13.87 m wide and 14.02 high. A slight variation in dimensions is noticed

when one goes from the front to rear, which might have been done intentionally to increase the depth of the hall.
