Shravanabelagola is a village famous for its impressive Jain temple. It is also Called as Lord of Gomateshwara. It is located in Hassan District of Karnataka.
The town is wedged between two rocky hills- Vindhyagiri and Chandragiri.The town's Municipality has existed for the past 70 years.
There is a tank in the midst of this town called "Belagola" In Kannada (the state language), 'Bela' means white and 'kola' means the pond, an allusion to the beautiful pond in the middle of the town. Shravanabelagola is a holy place for Jains.
Their Guru is residing here in a Mutt. There is a Sanskrit Patashala to study Sanskrit and Shastras.
The Mahamastakabisheka festival, an elaborate ritual, held here once every 12 years, the last one in 2006, attracts devotees from all over the world.
Priests climb up to pour hundreds of pots of tender coconut water, turmeric paste, vermilion powder, sugarcane juice, milk, rice flour, kashaya (a herbal concoction), shrigandha (sandal paste), chandana (coloured sandal paste), ashtagandha (eight varieties of sandal paste), saffron, gold and silver flowers, and precious stones over the statue's head.
How To Go:-Shravanabelagola is 146 km from Bangalore and 11 km from Channarayapatna. Hassan 57 km, Mysore 83 km, Arasikere 63 km.
The nearest airport is at Bangalore (157 kms) which is well connected with All major Airports.
Shravanbelgoda(SBGA) is a Railway station now, but it is served only by a dialy passenger train from Mysore (via Hassan).
Nearest Big station is Hassan (57 Km) and Bangalore is (157 Km away). Taxi or cars are the other options from here.
Shravanabelagola is well connected by road from all important towns in Karnataka. You can get here from Mysore, Bangalore or Hassan. Buses from Hassan are frequent. But there are no direct buses to Shravanabelagola. You have to change over at Channarayapatna.
