The Blackbuck reserve at Rehkuri is known as the Rehkuri kalveet Reserve is one of the few sanctuaries in India where Black bucks can be spotted in huge numbers.
Rehkuri located on the road from Bhigwan to Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. Apart from Blackbuck, Rehkuri is host to other ungulates like the Bhekar and small numbers of Sambar and carnivorous animals like the Dhole (wild dog), fox, Indian brown wolf and (allegedly) Indian Hyena.
The entire Rehkuri Black Buck Sanctuary is spread across 2.17 Sq. Kms of land area and it is estimated that as of today there are some 400 to 500 Indian Black Bucks inside this sanctuary.Sanctuary officials have also built watchtowers and watchrooms inside the sanctuary to facilitate the view of Black Bucks.
About the Blackbuck:The Indian Blackbuck (Kalveet/Antilope cervicopara) is one of the most graceful members of the antelope family. The Blackbuck derives its name from the unique coloring pattern of sexually mature males. One of the few antelope which exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, the genders in the blackbuck are readily distinguishable. Both sexes have white underparts, including the insides of the legs and lower chest, as well as a white ring surrounding the eye and a white chin. Females and young are yellowish-fawn on their back and head, and are generally hornless. Males gradually darken from tan to deep brown or black with age, beginning after 2 years. The horns, found only in males and appearing before their pronounced colour change, are twisted in a tight spiral with up to five turns. With a recorded speed of over 58kph, it is considered to be the second fastest animal in the world after the Cheetah. Speed however did not save it from the greed of the hunters and this animal nearly came to be extinct in the 50’s with only a few hundred remaining in the wild. Since then concerted efforts by the government have ensured that the black buck population has recovered. However It still remains on the list of Schedule-1 (Protected) animals.
