The Pamban Rail bridge, an engineering marvel and India’s first cantilever bridge.
After feasibility study, a proposal on “Indo-Ceylon project” was sent to the British Parliament for building a rail bridge from Mandapam to Pamban and from Danushkodi to Thalaimannar at an estimated cost of Rs. 299 lakh. The British Parliament rejected the project, stating that the cost of the project was too high. It, however, gave its nod for the Pamban rail bridge at a cost Rs 70 lakh in 1880.
Soon the excavation work began and the South Indian Railway commenced the bridge construction in 1902.
The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m) long. It was opened on 24 February 1914, construction having begun in 1911.
If a person wants to reach Rameswaram Island , We should have to cross this bridge.(If you travel by the train you may see this massive bridge through your window, when the train passes the sea through the Pamban Rail Bridge.
The Pamban bridge was the only link between Rameswaram and the mainland until 1988 when a road bridge, running parallel to it, was built. Earlier, it used to transport hundreds of pilgrims everyday to the temple in the island.
German engineer Scherzer designed the central part of the bridge that opens up to allow ferry movement.
On an average, 10 to 15 boats and small ships pass beneath the bridge every month.
In 1964, the bridge survived a major cyclone that flattened Dhanushkodi, a thriving port town.
E Sreedharan, the man behind the construction of the Delhi Metro, played a major role in bolstering the bridge within 46 days.
How To Go:-
The Bridge is 14.8 KM Away from Rameswaram Bus stand.
